AI Trend Report · September 2026

Agents got cheaper. Most companies still haven’t scaled.

Covers mid-August to mid-September 2026. Seven developments that change how companies should adopt AI, what each one means for your team, and three things to do this month.

In one minute

  • Running agents is getting cheaper, and the leading labs are competing on data privacy and safeguards, not only on benchmarks.
  • The gap is widening. OpenAI’s enterprise data shows its heaviest-using customers pulling away from typical ones, and agent use spreading from engineering into legal, sales and recruiting.
  • Most companies are stuck at the pilot stage. Gartner found only 22% of large organizations have scaled AI across several business units. The ones getting returns track them project by project.
  • Rules are arriving on a timetable. EU enforcement started in August; rules for high-risk uses such as hiring come in December 2027. California created a framework for independent AI audits.
